Liverpool 03 Boys Barnes (Woodberry)

2012 - 2013 Regular

LFCA 03B Barnes: Spring 2013 SDL Season

Team Legend - John Barnes
Without doubt one of the best players in the world when he arrived at Liverpool. He was player of the year in England in championship seasons 1987-88 and 1989-90 and dominated the English game at least for four years. His hamstring problems forced him to change his position from a flying winger to a central midfielder. His understanding of the game was immaculate and his team mates were inspired by his presence on the field.

Looking for a great team?

Consider joining Liverpool Reds ’03 Boys Barnes (Terry Woodberry)

There are a lot of things to think about when selecting the right team for you and your family.  We asked our parents and players what is important to them and compared that to what Liverpool has to offer.  Here’s a summary of the results.  Scan the FAQs to see if we are a potential match for you.

Want to learn even more?  Try out a practice.  The best day to come is Tuesday or Thursday when you can meet with Coach Woody after practice and ask your questions face-to-face.  Scroll to the “Practice Schedule” section to find upcoming times and locations.

You can also contact Coach Woody WOODBERRY27@aol.com, or our outstanding Team Manger, Kristin Hays krishays@me.com, to get more information before you visit.

So what’s the coach like?

Coach Woody has great chemistry with the boys.  He brings a great combination of discipline, skill development, direction, encouragement and lots of laughs.  As a parent it is great to see your child leave practice with a big smile on their face, sweaty and tired from a good workout, and talking up a storm about all the cool things they learned and fun things that happened at practice.  When coaching from the sidelines, Coach Woody employs several approaches - verbal direction to teach skills, a quick rotation to the sidelines for more targeted individual feedback, and team huddles before the game, at the half, and post-game feedback.

Getting an assessment of how your child is doing can take place at any time during the season, with one of the best being right after a tournament when Coach Woody can observe the kids in the heat of competition.  He’ll provide feedback on strengths and weaknesses, playing time considerations, or answer any questions you may have. Just send him a text or give him a call to set up a time for a one-on-one discussion in person or over the phone.

Liverpool has a policy of no parent coaching their own child, which eliminates potential conflicts.

What types of training will my son get?  Will I have to supplement the training with skills elsewhere?

Skills and conditioning with a good helping of field positioning is what you will find.  Generally practices are divided - two-thirds skills and one-third strategy and field positioning.  As a former player and experienced coach, Coach Woody has a large bag of techniques in his arsenal to teach the boys - from more traditional skills drills (including 1-touch, passing, and control) and scrimmage to silly games that teach teamwork, shooting and going after the ball.  Coach Woody will also talk to the boys about the importance of good nutrition, conditioning and hydration so they can play their best.

Practices are currently held two days a week - Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. In between seasons, the boys often have endurance and speed training on Saturday mornings.  Parents are asked to have their son at the game 45 minutes prior to the start to warm-up and participate in the team huddle.

As a sign of their commitment to training, Liverpool makes sure the team has good practice facilities.  The fields are well maintained and lit.  It’s raining or too hot - we practice at an indoor facility.  Fields closed for care or space is getting tight - an alternative location is lined up.

Liverpool offers camps during school breaks and summer so the boys can continue to work on their skills and even get exposure to other coaches.  The team also offers dedicated goalie training.

Are the parents committed?  How do they help the boys bond for better teamwork on the field?

From cooling off in one of the family’s pool, to family meals at a local restaurant after the game, the parents really make an effort to get to know each other and make sure the boys get some fun time together to build friendships.  Birthdays and end of season games are celebrated with donuts, cookies, cake or pizza from the parents.

During downtime between tournament games, families can be found gathering for board games and rehydration in a central location.

Parents help each other out by forming car pools to make sure the boys are on time for practice and pre-game warm ups.

What are the costs?  What are the payment options?  What’s included in the uniform price?

Current team cost information for registration and coaching feeds can be found here:

Liverpool offers flexible payment options.  Parents can give cash or checks to the team parent, or use the online payment option, which allows for single or installment payments.  League and tournament fees are paid separately.

The ’03 boys uniform package includes 2 jerseys (one red and one grey), two shorts, socks and two practice tees.  Boys are encouraged to wear practice tees and red shorts to practice.

Several times a year Liverpool holds Spirit Wear Truck Shows where you can pick up additional Liverpool sweatshirts, T-shirts, jackets, and other items for kids and parents.

In the spring, Liverpool holds its annual Spring Flower Fundraiser to support player and coach programs, equipment needs, field improvements, scholarships and more.  Families are asked to sell a minimum number of Spring Flower flats.  Sales above the minimum earn funds for the team to fund tournament fees and other team specific costs.  Individual players that sell more than the minimum can apply a portion of the funds they raise to their registration and player fees.

Is this a good team?  How well do the boys work together?

Liverpool teams play outdoor in the Select Development League and indoor Futsal at IAD/City Futsal in Carrollton.  We have also played indoor at Blue Sky in the Colony.  Teams play in only one league each season.  Participation in 3v3 and 4v4 tournaments is optional at parent discretion.

On field the focus is on communication and leadership.  The boys are learning to organize themselves, root for each other, have your teammates back, pass, and not be a ball hog.  This shows in the way the boys rally and support each other win or lose.

How do I find out what’s going on and where we are supposed to be?

Our Team Manager is committed to keep you updated.  Like clockwork each week you will receive e-mail with practice times and locations, game details, and information on upcoming events, and any required paperwork or fees that are due.

The morning of the game (or the night before, if the game is early) you will get an e-mail reminder with arrival time, game time, and map links to the location.  This e-mail will also let you know what jersey the boys will be wearing at the game.

When the weather is bad, you get periodic updates on field and game status via text and e-mail so you know whether or not to head out.  Of course you can also check the league’s hot line for additional information at the link provided in the updates.

On the horizon, Liverpool is looking to add the mobile app functionality of the web site, which will provide expanded up-to-the-minute information.

In the long term I want to position my son to have the best opportunity, how are you going to help us do that?

Training, conditioning, field vision, leadership, passing, timely feedback, and teamwork.  As a large organization with overseas affiliation, Liverpool has and is continuing to add resources to help your child be the best they can be.  We encourage you to explore the Liverpool website to see all the things you will have access to including college recruiting and specialized training.

See what the boys have to say.

He is tough but fair.  My dad says he builds character and integrity in our team.

He doesn’t yell.  He’s fair.  He’s nice.

The skills really help me out in real games.   Coolest thing I have learned is the “swivel” move.

This is my favorite practice of the week.  Don’t want to miss it.  It’s fun!

He teaches me new soccer moves each time.  He's a good coach.

I like the shooting practice.  Scrimmages are fun.

Coach Woody is a good player and teacher.  I look up to him.

I like that my teammates have a passion for soccer.

Season Summary – Spring 2012 5:2:1 Liverpool Reds 03 Boys Barnes (Woodberry)

“Building a solid foundation for success” is the best way to describe our season. We added several new players and moved players around to get the right mix. Players in every position – forward, mid-field and defense – had an opportunity to score leading to many fantastic surprise goals. The defense was dedicated and really began to go after the ball and break up a plays. What we were most proud of was that the boys came together and played as a team from start to finish. They never gave up even in the most difficult situations. This really built trust and confidence and has everyone excited to see the boys move to the next level.

Legends 9v9 Tournament

Spring - Summer 2012

What a difference a season makes!  We are happy to welcome back old friends and have several guest players become permanent members.  The addition of many great players and their families combined with dedicated practice by the boys is propelling the Liverpool Reds 03 Barnes team to new heights. Together the boys moved up the ranks to take Second Place in the Legends and Guts & Glory tournaments.  They capped off the summer with a First Place finish in The Colony Indoor league.
